1. Use a special coffee maker
You will need an espresso maker, because this beverage must be prepared with pressurized water, almost boiling, that will pass through the fine coffee beans, helping to disperse the rich oils of the coffee.
2. Keep in mind the cup
The espresso shot measures one ounce and has a slightly thicker texture than otherwise prepared coffees. To prepare an espresso you will need approximately 8 to 10 grams of coffee. Keep in mind that the porcelain cup is usually slightly heated to prevent the coffee from getting cold when serving it, for this you can wash it with hot water just before serving the beverage.
3. Make sure that there are no residues from previous coffees
Traditionally, espresso machines have a leveler that needs to be manipulated and removed to be able to press the water to the bottom of the cup. However, before doing so you should make sure that it is clean. The same goes for the filter, it must be clean and dry because that can affect the final result of your coffee.
4. Time also matters
An espresso is prepared quickly and if it is made correctly, it will have a layer of golden crema on the surface. So you should make sure you have everything you need before starting the process because if you do not do it quickly the coffee will not extract well and can become bitter. The preparation range is 20 to 30 seconds, but you can experiment a little to get the best result.
5. The crema defines a good preparation
The crema is formed when in the extraction of the coffee, the pressurized water causes micro bubbles of air to combine with the soluble oils of the coffee, being responsible for adding a rich flavor and aroma. Usually, this is the indicator of an espresso that has been made correctly.
Two very simple tips for you to keep in mind:
1- When the crema is golden and lingers, we can say that the espresso was well done.
2- When the crema is pale and thin, the drink will not have the same intensity in aroma and flavor.
